Health Tips

week 45 in 2008

Do you too want to be a smart shopper?!

Of course you do.

It is easy to spend less on your weekly expenses for food.

How much does one fast food meal cost you?

Suppose pizzas for the family costs you, one night only, $ ...fill in ......

Now see what you can buy for those dollars in fresh food: ………………………….

Go on, have a look at your receipt next time, and see how much you can buy, apples, vegetables in season, tomatoes, pasta, bread, margarine, peanut butter, plain breakfast cereals, milk (powder is more economical), some citrus fruit, all for that same amount of money?

Now see whether it actually saves you time to get take aways:

you have to get in the car and drive there (and remember to ad the petrol costs to the meal price), 10 minutes,

choose and order pizza, plus wait: of course you want it freshly made: 15 - 25 minutes depending on the queue (anything shorter than that, it is probably not freshly made, dough needs time to be bake properly)

drive back: another 10 minutes

total easily 45 minutes away from the house, not being able to do anything else.

Have you ever tried to make a pizza yourself? You can start with wholemeal pita bread base, or a simple recipe, with which the children can help:

this is a no-yeast version, it does not need time to rise, from Health Food Guide December 2007 issue

2 cups flour, 1 tbsp baking powder, a generous dash of oil and milk.

Mix and add toppings of your choice. Bake.

A more elaborate version, that takes rising time (remember you can do chores in the meantime, or help your children with home work, or put your feet up):

1 tbsp dried yeast                            1 tsp salt

½ tsp sugar                                    3 cups plain baking flour

1 cup tepid water                             1 tbsp oil

Put yeast, sugar and water in a small bowl. Set aside for 15 minutes or until frothy.

Sift salt and flour into another bowl. Add oil and yeast mixture. Mix well.

Turn dough out onto lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic.

lightly oil bowl. Return dough to bowl. Cover with a clean tea towel and set in a warm place until double in size (warm place can be the oven on 50 degrees, or the hot water cupboard).

Punch dough down in the centre with your fist then lightly knead again.

Press into lightly oiled 25 cm pizza pan, or put in straight onto a baking tray.

Spread with topping of your choice.

this is a yeast version, it does take time to rise, from Edmonds Cook Book

preparation time for this version: 15 (waiting for yeast) + 10 (mix all ingredients) + 30 (waiting for dough to double in size) + 10 (second kneading and toppings) plus baking (these are short bursts of activity, remember you can do chores in the meantime, make some phone calls, help with home work, put your feet up, or do some fitness training).

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees.

Once the dough is ready, spread with tomato sauce form a bottle, add anything you like such as sausages cut into cubes, fresh chives, pineapple, ham, bacon, you name it, maybe artichokes and small pieces of cooked chicken, sliced tomato and relish. Or canned spaghetti, with diced capsicum and spinach leaves. Finish with some grated cheese.

Put in the oven until cheese is melted, ( appr. 15 minutes) and ENJOY!

This tastes soooo much better!
